Sean WuMALIBU, California – Pepperdine University senior Sean Wu was recently named a 2025 Rhodes Scholar, becoming the first student in the university’s history to earn the prestigious honor. Wu joins a group of 32 exceptional students from across the United States who will attend the University of Oxford in October 2025 as part of the globally renowned Rhodes Scholarship program.

“I am deeply honored to receive this scholarship,” said Wu. “It’s an achievement I never imagined in my life, and a privilege to join some of the world’s leading scholars in fighting the world's fights.”

Sean Wu is a computer science and mathematics major whose research focuses on machine learning and medicine. He credits Pepperdine’s Keck Institute for Data Science and supportive faculty for shaping his academic path.

“The research opportunities provided by the institute have been critical for me to get here in the first place,” Wu shared. “The mentorship and support I’ve received from my professors have been invaluable.”

“We at Pepperdine are incredibly proud of Sean’s achievement in being named a Rhodes Scholar,” said Pepperdine President Jim Gash. “This milestone represents the exact kind of academic excellence central to who we are at Pepperdine, and it also speaks to the outstanding work of all of our faculty at the Keck Institute. Most of all, it highlights the immense talent and effort of Sean himself. We can’t wait to watch how he continues to shine in the future at Oxford and beyond.”

Dr. Fabien Scalzo, associate professor of computer science and director of Pepperdine’s Keck Institute for Data Science, praised Wu’s dedication and vision. “Working with Sean has been a delight,” Scalzo said. “He makes academic excellence look easy. But don't be mistaken; his achievements are the result of countless hours of hard work combined with impeccable work ethic. What distinguishes Sean is his true kindness to others, his willingness to help, and the positive energy that radiates around him. He embodies Pepperdine values to the fullest. I look forward to seeing what he will accomplish in the future.”

At Oxford, Wu looks forward to expanding his global perspective and completing two master’s degrees over the next two years: an MSc in Advanced Computer Science and an MSc in Applied Digital Health.

The Rhodes Scholarship, established in 1903, is widely regarded as the most distinguished international academic award for college graduates. Students are selected based on their academic achievements, leadership potential, and commitment to service. This year’s scholars were chosen from nearly 3,000 applicants representing 243 colleges and universities across the nation.
