From September 27 to September 30, 2023, the Pepperdine Theatre Program will present a student production of Irish-born and Australian-raised playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer’s award-winning play, This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing. Hollace Starr, associate professor of theatre at Seaver College, will direct.

“This is a tremendously imaginative play that speaks to our ability to collaborate creatively with life,” says Starr. “It is described as a play for young audiences, but we believe that it will be satisfying for audiences of all ages.”

The play features a fairytale-like plot in which triplet sisters are left in the forest by their woodcutter father. They decide that one sister will walk in one direction, one will walk in the other, and the third will stay where she is. After facing myriad challenges and adventures, they reunite 20 years later to share their experiences and face each other as women.

“For me, the story of This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing is simply beautiful,” says Holly Jackson, a Seaver College senior majoring in theatre and screen arts with a minor in film studies, who plays Albienne in the production. “It allows the audience to have fun and watch a storybook come to life. One of the most important messages of this play is that no matter how far your dreams and goals may take you away from what is familiar, you will always be able to find yourself, despite your obstacles, and have a beautiful story to tell in the end.”

Performances will take place at Lindhurst Theatre on the Malibu campus at 7:30 PM from Wednesday, September 27, to Friday, September 29, with 11 AM and 3 PM matinees on Saturday, September 30. The performers and the director will participate in a talk-back session after the performance on Wednesday, September 27.

Tickets are available on the Center for the Arts website.
