Pepperdine University will celebrate International Education Week from November 18
to November 22, 2024. Coordinated by the US Department of State and the US Department
of Education, this annual initiative highlights the personal and communal benefits
of international education and cultural exchange. Through a series of engaging events
and discussions, Pepperdine's International Education Week events will shine a light
on the value of cross-cultural understanding and global awareness to enrich our community,
enhance academic excellence, and prepare our students to thrive in a global environment.
Join us for a series of engaging events and discussions that will highlight international
perspectives and broaden our community's understanding of global citizenship.

Dr. Luisa Blanco from the School of Public Policy and Dr. George Carlsen from Seaver
College will moderate a conversation with Oscar Mondragon, director of the Malibu
Community Labor Exchange. Topics of discussion will include the value of centralizing
a safe place for workers and local employers to meet, the importance of outreach initiatives
conducted at the MCLE on financial and medical literacy to better the lives of day
laborers, and the impact of Pepperdine’s Service Learning initiatives to foster intercultural
connection and language acquisition for both students and workers.

Italian Mediterranean Diet and Culinary Roots: A Spotlight on Olive Oil and Balsamic

In celebration of the Week of Italian Cuisine in the World and International Education
Week, the Consulate General of Italy, the Italian Cultural Institute, COM.IT.ES Los
Angeles, and the Italian Studies program at Pepperdine University are pleased to present
a panel discussion on “The Italian Mediterranean Diet and Culinary Roots” with a spotlight
on the health benefits of two iconic Italian staples: olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
Panelists include Dr. Maura Fanti, researcher in Dr. Valter Longo’s USC Longevity
Institute; chef Tommaso Iorio, founder of “Tuscany at Home”; Fabrizio Cuomo of De
Negris balsamic vinegar; and Dr. Sunnie DeLano, professor and director of the Nutritional
Science Certificate Program. The panel will be moderated by professor Brittany Corbucci
together with Seaver Italian majors/minors. The event will include insights from each
speaker, followed by time for questions from the audience. A reception with olive
oil and balsamic vinegar tastings and pairings will precede the panel.

Chile and World Literature with Dr. Ignacio López Calvo
One of the world’s most important scholars on Latin American literature and its global
connections, Dr. Ignacio López Calvo , presidential endowed chair of humanities, professor of Latin American Literature
and Culture, UC Merced, will discuss his research on Chile and its connections to
World Literature. His recent edited volume A History of Chilean Literature includes discussion of famous authors such as Nobel prize-winning poets Gabriela
Mistral and Pablo Neruda as well as global best-selling novelist Isabel Allende. Dr.
Lopez Calvo will be introduced by interim vice provost Dr. Lila McDowell Carlsen who
will also moderate the event. Refreshments will be served.
